Are you passionate about protecting people, property, and the environment? Join us as a Warning & Informing Advisor and play a key part in how Wales prepares for and responds to flooding.
Based in North or Mid Wales you’ll help deliver and enhance our flood warning services—ensuring communities receive timely, accurate information when it matters most.
Our main priority is the operational delivery of the flood warning service. This includes ensuring the wellbeing and proficiency of our duty officers, ensuring procedures are clear and up to date and implementing improvements in targeted areas. We also work with communities at risk of flooding, for example supporting them in developing community flood plans and establishing their own community flood volunteers.
A key responsibility will be managing the Warning & Informing mailbox, ensuring communications are triaged, coordinated, and responded to promptly and appropriately. You’ll liaise with internal teams and external partners to gather information and draft clear, consistent responses aligned with organisational protocols. Logging and tracking correspondence will help maintain audit trails and support continuous service improvement.
You’ll also play an active role during flood events by joining our 24/7 duty officer rota, typically covering one week every six to eight weeks. During these periods, you’ll be on standby to provide vital operational support if required.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to an NRW office within North Wales or Welshpool and a hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. We are mostly home based but there would be an expectation to attend semi frequent in-person meetings across various offices in your area.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is at the forefront of tackling the risks and impacts of climate change. The Warning and Informing team sits within the Flood and Water Management department. We monitor rainfall, river levels and sea conditions to provide a 24/7 flood warning service to many communities across our operational area, engaging with communities, and collaborating with professional partners.
The team ensures timely, accurate, and effective communication during emergencies, incidents, and planned exercises, supporting public safety and organisational resilience by managing information flow and coordinating messaging across stakeholders.
What you will do
- Contribute to the management of flood incidents by participating in the identification and development of business/work plans in order to reduce and manage flood risk.
- Support Health and Safety best practice by actively promoting awareness and ensuring the provision of safe working practices to comply with NRW’s policy and standards.
- Promote the efficient and effective use of resources in order to ensure activities are completed to time, and to cost and quality targets.
- Participate in cross team working and seek to influence customers and establish local partnerships to deliver common NRW’s objectives.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the flood warning service so that the area, it’s partners and the public are prepared to respond to flood events.
- Provide input to incident plans and procedures with external partners and test through exercise in order to ensure the area is prepared for flood events.
- Coordinate and administer internal procedures to ensure that the area can respond effectively during a flood event.

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.
- Degree in relevant scientific subject (e.g. physical geography, environment science or civil engineering) or equivalent experience.
- Graduate member of appropriate professional body (e.g. CIWEM, ICE or IRM).
- Ability to demonstrate a basic understanding of a wide range of flooding related issues e.g. data management, flood warning and informing processes and methods, and response by the public and professional partners.
- Computer literate.
- Ability to demonstrate communication, skills, particularly when dealing with professional partners and the public
- Experience of coaching/mentoring people.
- Must have a full UK driving licence.
Welsh Language Level requirements:
- Essential: A1 – Entry level
