The role

Looking to kick‑start your engineering career in a role that makes a real difference to people and the environment? This is an exciting opportunity to join our Integrated Engineering team in North East Wales, where you will support the delivery of flood risk maintenance and capital improvement projects that protect communities and enhance the natural environment.

This role is ideally suited to those at the beginning of their engineering journey. It offers hands‑on experience across a wide range of activities, including asset management, health and safety planning, GIS mapping, and emergency response. You will work alongside experienced professionals who will support your development, with clear opportunities to progress into more senior engineering roles as your skills and experience grow.

You’ll be part of a supportive and collaborative team, working both in the office and out in the field. The role sits within our Operations Directorate and reports to the Team Leader. Your base location is flexible within the region, and you’ll work closely with colleagues, contractors, and stakeholders to help protect communities from flooding and enhance the natural environment

As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to an NRW office within North East Wales and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any fieldwork, meetings or training will be planned in advance.

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date. 

What you will do

  • Contribute to and monitor the delivery and planning of the flood defence maintenance programme, including individual projects.
  • Undertake utility searches and gather other technical, environmental and H&S information for individual works and input into the risk management planning of the work.
  • Provide financial and technical data, including estimating, to enable accurate costing to ensure efficient and effective delivery of works to meet cost, quality, and deadlines.
  • Assist in the support of contract management and the undertaking of active monitoring to deliver the flood risk maintenance programme.
  • Effective use of GIS systems to produce critical documents, used in the delivery of FRM maintenance and projects.  
  • Procuring goods and services, adhering to framework agreements and following processes and procedures.
  • Liaise with stakeholders including; local authorities, land owners, environmental groups etc. 
    Assist with the development of flood incident response plans.  
  • Independently undertake site surveys assessing asset maintenance and flood scheme improvement projects.
  • Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills

In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.

  1. Qualifications; HND/HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent is desirable with a minimum advanced level (A levels or equivalent) and related experience. 
  2. Knowledge of H&S best practice with experience of actively promoting awareness and ensuring the provision of safe working practices to comply with NRW policy and standards.  
  3. Experience of cross-team working and stakeholder engagement to establish partnerships in the delivery of NRW flood risk objectives. 
  4. Good ICT, organisational and records management skills.
  5. Full UK driving licence. 

Welsh Language level requirements 

  • Essential: Level A1 - Entry level
