You will play a key role in regulating permitted waste sites across Ceredigion and Powys, carrying out site inspections – independently and in teams – to ensure environmental permits are being followed.
You’ll build productive relationships with site operators, offering guidance and taking proportionate enforcement action where necessary to drive compliance and protect our natural resources.
You’ll also respond swiftly and effectively to environmental incidents, including illegal waste activities, as part of NRW’s duty as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act. Covering a large geographical area you will need to hold a valid full UK licence to drive NRW fleet vehicles (cars and vans).

About us
As part of the Mid Wales Waste and Enforcement team at Natural Resources Wales you will be in a multi-functional team comprising of officers specialising in waste regulation, hazardous waste, environmental enforcement and tackling waste crime. The team is part of our Mid Wales Operations directorate and covers all of Ceredigion and Powys.
What you will do
- Assess compliance at waste sites.
- Take appropriate actions to collect evidence for enforcement purposes, in accordance with defined procedures.
- Where non-compliance is identified, recommend the most appropriate intervention option to ensure operators return to compliance as quickly as possible, with minimum environmental impact and consideration of the economic impacts.
- Assist in the development of medium-term regulatory strategies for regulated sites.
- Respond to incidents and complaints.
- Contribute to a positive health, safety and well-being culture.
- Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.
- Knowledge and experience of either working in a regulated industry or as a regulator.
- Good understanding of commercial business processes and pressures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with regulated business and the public, explaining issues and gaining support by influencing.
Welsh Language level requirements
